Frequently Asked Questions

What age is recommended for starting Skype piano lessons?
-
Typically the average age to begin lessons is 6 years old. It depends on the child’s ability to focus, listen and operate simple commands at the computer.
Are there benefits to Skype lessons compared to face to face lessons?
-
Yes. The main benefit is convenience and consistency in lessons. Without the added variable of traffic, illness, and busy schedules for yourself and family, you’re able to maintain lessons without added stress. Also, if you’re headed on vacation to a summer place and have the benefit of a keyboard, you’re able to take lessons with you. I have also maintained students who took lessons from me in the United States and relocated to various parts of the world.
Is Skype difficult to set up?
-
It is simple to set up and use. You will need a piano or keyboard, reliable internet connection and Skype compatible device. You will need your laptop to have a camera and microphone. iPads also work well because of their great cameras, microphones and Wi-Fi chipsets. Larger screens are preferable for a more interactive and personal experience.
How much will I need to practice?
-
As a beginner I will give you the recommended number of repetitions you should do daily for optimal results. With effective practice a beginner can accomplish their goals in about 15-20 minutes a day. As you advance , the time expands and can range from 30 minutes to an hour. I feel realistically if you’re able to get to the piano 5 days a week, you’re on track for good results. The more the better always!
How do I learn in detail about setting up for Skype piano lessons?
-
I offer a free Skype interview where we will discuss in detail what is involved. We will meet face to face via Skype and go over the programs I offer, what your interests and aspirations are, scheduling, and address technical questions.
How long a lesson will I (or my child) need?
-
Most young beginners start with 30 minutes for the 1st year and then expand to 45 minutes after the primer books are completed. For the intermediate and advanced levels, at least 45 minutes is necessary. Ideally one hour is recommended to cover technical work and a repertoire of pieces.

Is Theory important to learn along with piano lessons?
-
Yes. I strongly recommend adding a weekly theory class if possible. It is a vital component to ease and enhance learning how to read notes, understand rhythm, key signatures and so much more! Theory lessons are 30 minutes per week.
